The sea otter is considered a keystone species, having a huge effect on their ecosystem by protecting kelp forests (along with the species that depend on kelp forests) from being over-grazed by sea urchins. The removal of sea otters could disrupt the balance of their environment detrimentally, which is alarming because sea otters are currently an endangered species. I was lucky enough to get to see them at Morro Bay on a trip to California a couple years ago.
